What began as a spiral notebook…
We didn’t set out to create a coffee table book documenting 60 years of Salk science, history, and culture. But what began as a project to create a spiral notebook summarizing efforts to preserve and protect Salk’s iconic and historical architectural buildings didn't seem the best approach once we considered the topic. Quickly we realized that it was an opportunity to tell a larger story, one that also included the important history behind the Institute, the creative partnership between Jonas Salk and Louis Kahn in creating the landmark buildings considered masterworks of mid-century architecture, and to celebrate the sixty years of bold science flowing from the labs of the stunning Institute which sits atop the cliffs of the majestic Pacific Ocean in La Jolla, CA. Mid-Century to Next Century was a labor of love involving a creative professional team that took more than three years to complete. Ultimately, it successfully showcases the architectural beauty of the building, the Institute’s history, and the brilliance of the science underway on the stunning campus.
